"How external Insulation (ETICS) affects the dew point in your walls...."
The dew point temperature is the temperature at which the air can no longer hold all of its water vapour, and some of the water vapour must condense into liquid water.
During the winter, when you see moisture or frost on windowpanes, you are witnessing the condensation of the warmer interior air upon a cold surface. In Ireland, with our maritime temperate climate the temperature can fluctuate during the night and so we can experience multiple dew points.
Unfortunately, the same phenomena can occur inside your wall cavity and behind your dry lining. Water in any cavity will trigger the growth of fungus and mould which triggers adverse health effect such as asthma and allergies.
To reduce this problem, you need to move the point at which condensation occurs, the dew point, further away from the building interior.
With the current focus on energy saving, it is common for poorly insulated walls to be dry lined with 70 mm insulating boards. These typically have 50 mm of phenol insulation and 20 mm of plaster. While this makes for a decent U value and is a sound wall structurally, this wall design actually contributes to the condensation problem. It makes it more lightly that you will have fungi and mould growing in your rooms.
The reason is that the greater insulation thickness actually cools the block work bringing the dew point closer to the habitable space. Either the surface of the insulation or the inner layer of block work is where moisture
condensation will occur. Moisture plus dust always leads to growth.
By using an external insulation, the dew point is moved away from the interior and into the external insulation layer.
Since the insulations that we use with an ETICS system on the outside of your home have a low vapour permeability, the amount of condensation is tiny and well away from the inhabitants of the building. Condensation that forms in this area can drain out naturally.
So not only will External Insulation (ETICS) reduce your heading bill, but it also helps with your family's heath!
