"External Insulation and roofing details over bay windows"
Detail in external wall insulation projects is ke
y. Putting insulation on a plain expanse of blank wall is very easy. We like it because it is fast and easy. However homes are made up of more complex facades than just blank walls. Walls have openings for windows and doors and all sorts of complexities. It is our job to spot th
ese issues before starting and resolve them to the householder’s satisfaction.
Similarly with flat roofs we need to ensure that we do the very best for the householder. Long expanses of obstruction free roofs are easy to work with. Small sections of roof are fiddly and difficult to deal with. But we need to deal with them as badly done roofs leave water in and heat out.
The phot
ographs around this web article show a smal lsection of flat roof over a bay window. Behind the window is a frequently used room, which was very cold. We insulated the walls while we were doing the rest of the house, and we insulated the main section of flat roof also. So you might say that this project is an exampel of a "Deep Retrofit". Which is a way of saying that multiple insulation measur
es were taken at the same time.
This little part over the bay window represents about 5% of the roof for that room. So we believed that it is important to stop this section becoming a cold spot. Also if you look at the photographs you may notice that the roof was not level. In fact it
sloped backwards! Trapping water against the main wall of the house. On inspection we discovered this water had been seeping into the walls of the house damaging the fabric of the building and causing damp.
By applying a modern roofing solution from the outside we were able to resolve both the heat and waterproblems. We insulated to ensure that heat remained inside the thermal envelope, IE inside the room. We levelled and sealed the flat roof to prevent water pooling and seeping into the building.
This type of measure is a part of our service. Not all contractors will do this sort of work or be interested in doing it. If you want this type of measure included in your external wall insulation project please call us.
Plus you can qualify for a 4000 euro Irish Government grant since we are SEAI approved (Contractor number 11976)
