"Protecting your home while fitting External Wall Insulation."
As we as looking at the walls which we externally insulate we also must take care of the surroundings. Most of the work that we do is in retrofitting external insulation to existing homes. These homes have people living in them, flowers and toys in the garden, and pathways to be protected.
One of the great advantages of external insulation is that it is the fastest and tidiest way to insulate a house. That is one of the main reasons people ask us to add about 20 tonnes of material to the outside of their home. By adding an external insulating layer to their home people do not need to move out while a similar layer is added inside their houses. Also external insulation is technically the best solution for retrofitting insulation.
Since we trade on providing a fast and clean insulation solution we always need to consider that people will see the results of our work for many years. This and general pride in our work makes us consider how best to protect your home while we apply external insulation measures.
As a minimum we always deploy the following measures:
- Windows and Doors – we cover all windows and doors that are affected by our work with clear plastic foil.
- Footpaths and driveway – we cover all footpaths and driveways affected by our work with 1000 gauge polythene foil and over the foil we put a layer of plywood.
- New Window Sills - we cover all new window sills with clear plastic foil.
Windows and Doors
Windows and doors especially those that have been brought forward to eliminate cold bridging are vulnerable to splashes of coloured render. But at the same time the householder wants to be able to see out of their windows and not live in a dark cave. This best solution is to use a clear plastic foil over the window and door including the frame.
Footpaths and driveway
With the 1000 gauge polythene foil we can ensure that material such as render of adhesive does not adhere to paved surfaces. By using heavy plywood we then make sure that the polythene foil does not shift in the wind or as technicians work over them.
New Window Cills

Bedding window cills in securely means they have to be installed early in the insulation project. But having them installed early implies that they are exposed to being discoloured during the later stages of the project. The solution here is also to use a clear plastic foil. In this way the cills can be securely anchored in the brand new insulating facade so they will last and they remain pristine.
These kinds of steps, along with experienced staff and excellent supervision are key to making your external insulation project a fast and enjoyable experience!
