External Insulation and Irelands low carbon future
External Wall Insulation is highly specialised form of ecologically friendly construction. It will be a cornerstone of Ireland’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, from a currently unsustainable 14 tonnes per capita to a sustainable 1 ton per capita.
Ireland is currently implementing the European wide climate action plan 20-20-20 which prescribes three broad goals to be achieved by 2020. 
These are:
- A reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions of at least 20% below 1990 levels
- 20% of EU energy consumption to come from renewable resources
- A 20% reduction in primary energy use compared with projected levels, to be achieved by improving energy efficiency.
Deep Retrofitting
To externally insulate a house we basically build a new insulating wall outside your current walls. In this way you keep your existing structural walls in place and simply add an insulating element which is currently missing. By adding the insulation layer on the outside we do not disturb the residents and everybody can see that 100% of the walls are fully insulated. This is sometimes called deep retrofitting.
The approved process for deep retrofit
These additional insulating walls will consist
of several tonnes of certified materials.
All these materials are brought to your home as the project commences or soon after. Our suppliers are all approved by NSAI and we must ensure that only approved materials are used to insulate our client’s homes.
The largest bulk of material is always the insulation, followed by the adhesives and then the render. In addition there are steel and plastic fixings, meshes and other incidentals. These materials must all be stored neatly and properly for use during the project.
When the material is delivered it is check off against what was ordered and any discrepancies noted. For traceability, we also record all batch numbers and product numbers against each project. In this way we know exactly what materials were used in each External Wall Insulation project.
