External Insulation work in progress in Rathmines

"Act together for even better value External Insulation...."

Great location, but very cold....  was the cry from all the house holders in this Insulating a development in Rathminesmature Rathmines development.  Built in the early 1980s when insulation was a exotic substance these houses relied Electric heating for warmth.  The recent cold winter exposed the terrible cost of pumping out expensive electric heat which passed directly out through these walls.

As built these homes had red brick and cavity block wall to the front and a cavity block wall everywhere else.  This gave very little protection from the cold.  These typical Dublin hollow bock walls with a sand and cement render have a U value of about 2.1.   This means a heat loss that is about 8 times worse than  today’s building regulations.

Externally Insulated terrace in Rathmines

To fix this terrible loss of energy out through the walls this terrace turned to Wall Insulation to fix the entire problem.
Careful investigation and experience showed that there was an empty 100mm cavity in the front wall.  This makes it very straightforward to quickly and cleanly insulate the front wall.

The Cavity Wall Insulation we used is an expanded polystyrene material injected in bead form with a binding agent into the cavity wall. It is ideally used to reduce the thermal transmittance of completed wall, with masonry inner and outer leaves. Filling the cavity with this type of material will not diminish the original function of the cavity. The cavity will still be able to breath, the bead will not absorb water and will not allow the transfer of water across the cavity to the inner leaf.   The bead and bonding agent was injected, through drill holes, into the cavity using a specifically designed drill pattern. The material packs a uniform density inside the cavity. Once the proper drilling pattern and injection sequence is followed the cavity will be completely filled.

The remainder of the house was of course insulated from the outside, using one of our NSAI approved systems.  This gives a very high quality finish and totally eliminates thermal bridging.
