"Deep retrofit of a home in Knocklyon, Dublin 16."
This house in Knocklyon, Dublin 16 is has great views into the Dublin hills and beyond into the Wicklow Hills. It is lovely house with a well insulated extension to the rear. Except like so many Dublin developments that were built in the 80s and 90s the levels of insulation in the walls of the original house were pathetic.
No matter how warm you make these homes in the evening when you turn
off the gas central heating on the way to bed the temperature drops away. These homes cost a fortune to heat and you can never be really comfortable in them. Unless you implement modern levels of insulation. In this case the house was build of cavity blocks (hollow blocks) so there is no way to insulate the cavity. The owners did not want the hassle of redecorating inside and they understood the superior technical performance of external insulation so they chose external insulation to make their home more comfortable.
This type of house has three different type of wall, which had to be treated in three different ways.
A new extension to the rear was build with sufficient insulation so all we simply rendered the walls to match the rest of the house.
The rendered block work walls was fully insulated using 150 mm GEEP insulation and rendered over.
The brick section to the front, was rebuilt using brick slips over an insulation layer. In this way it kept the same appearance but gained a layer of insulation.
